In order to give my clients the most beneficial advise. I must be aware of my responsibilities in following the value practices of social work. Know my position in the helping domain According to the Association of Australian Social Workers, social work practice should aim to help individuals achieve success in both personal and social endeavours in order to encourage wellbeing of the individual (aasw 2002,p 5). My self-evaluation will analyse how personal philosophy compliments or contradicts the value set out in social work practice. I will explore my values in relation to individual relationships and speak about my hopes for the future of the world I shall also explore the origins of my philosophies, the pillars that sustain them and the events in my life that have shaped my beliefs. I will then examine the steps I would take to prevent conflicts of interest between my client and me Personal life Philosophy Human beings irrespective of gender, race, or status govern their lives according to a series of rules that show the way to behave among family, friends, and the wider community. These are called values and are signals that give direction about right and wrong (Dolgoff et al, 2009, p20, Beckett Maynard, 2005, p5). Values stem from a variety of areas, as children we are raised in communities that influence our behaviour Beckett and Maynard (2005) refer to these as value systems. The ideals we take from our societies can be static and others can change overtime. (Beckett Maynard, 2005) Culture has a major impact on our value systems; it influences our professional lives, as well as our private lives. (Otima Doyle, Shari E. Miller, F. Y. Mirza, 2007). I also govern my actions according to values learned as a child and my philosophy has been shaped by a cross-cultural upbringing, I was raised in Papua New Guinea where I received a western education that encouraged individualism and in Uganda, I received a Catholic education where I learned the values of community. I experienced the liberal lifestyle in university. These diverse environments have contributed to how I view the world today. I value people above all other beings because of the way I was raised in Uganda with family members that supported each other economically I did not experience great hardship. However I knew that my parents did. This awareness taught me to respect hard work and value integrity, because my parents despite their struggles resisted the pressures of the government to sacrifice personal integrity for wealth. I value honesty and for me that includes being open about my abilities to take cases that may cause me great distress and I consider credibility in matters pertaining to worker client confidentiality valuable Compassion and charity are also important to me because I believe that in order to be an effective helper, a charitable nature goes along way towards understanding the needs of a client. I am aware however that emotional distance must be exercised. I need to be careful not become emotionally attached to the client In order to prevent my imposing my values upon my client. I believe in being committed to all my relationships, and feel that in order to achieve success in either my personal or professional life I must be faithful in keeping private details in confidence. Finally I believe that in order for a relationship to grow there needs to be acceptance for differences in all aspects of life, from how someone behaves, to the opinions they hold. Therefore if I choose to interact with people regularly I should be able to accept them completely. I may not like their actions but I should acknowledge that my clients come from different backgrounds and as a social worker my duty lies in not judging them, but rather I am there to help them work through their problems. Hope for the future and the world The future is truly an unknown that holds a lot of uncertainty for me; at present I can not clearly picture what my hopes and dreams are. However there are some things I would like to see change in the next ten years: The first area of concern for me is the climate change debate, instead of the constant rhetoric from the major world leaders like the United States, Russia, Great Britain, and China. I would like to see concrete steps being taken to reduce greenhouse gas emission coming from industries around the world. Secondly I wish that in the next few years the millennium development goals (MDGs) are achieved before the dead line in 2015 so far very limited success has been reported according to the United Nations MDGS report of 2009 progress has been noted in only four goals of the ten goal program. The report outlines the progress made in reducing infant deaths, from its 1990 figure of 12.6million to 9 million in 2007; the report also cites progress in the areas of education, pov erty and reduction of pollutants. They however admit that more progress is needed in order to meet the 2015 deadline. Finally I hope that more pharmaceutical companies will join the global initiative to find cheaper alternative solutions to the medical needs of the world. I hope the companies like Glaxo smith Kline and its many rivals dispense with the need to make money and consider saving lives as their priority Origins of values and reinforcement My philosophy comes from many experiences. As a child I grew up with cataracts that affected my vision. The condition over the course of my education has caused me great frustration. However, the love and strength of my mother ensured that I had the best possible start. She taught me never to give up; the support of my educators also showed me that despite the presence of obstacles, if I worked hard I would achieve my goals. The challenges due to my visual impediment have taught me to be compassionate towards all people who have challenges in their own lives, I have experienced the hardship of trying to live and work with people who have few physical limitations. Reading is a skill that I love but at times I dislike it because the fonts used in books are often too small and cause me to be slower these seemingly minor worries cause me some frustration. I however find great inspiration from men like the Australian born Nick Vujicic who was born with no limbs and with only a tiny foot l ives life to the full. With a double degree in accounting and financial planning He speaks with strength about his journey I found the purpose of my existence, and also the purpose of my circumstance. (Nick Vujicic 2010). His ability to succeed in the way he has despite his obvious challenges, amazes and humbles me into the realisation that I can achieve any goal if I truly want it. My life philosophies are sustained by my belief in God to whom I turn to for guidance; guidance I find in the writings of the Old and New Testament of the Bible. In the Old Testament writings, especially in the book of Deuteronomy, I find the moral values by which I govern my life. Set out in The Ten Commandments (NIV Bible, Duet; 5:1-32) that guide me on how to live my life in accordance to Gods wishes. Other values that have contributed to who I am come from other books I have read. Books by Charles Dickens such as Oliver Twist and Hard Times have painted harsh pictures of poverty in industrial England during the 19th and early 20th century these stories sparked an interest in perusing solutions to human suffering. Before coming to Australia I had completed a degree in International relations with the hope of leading my nation towards finding solutions to our domestic problems in the International arena these aspirations however have not been achieved so far Personal values in relation to Social work After reading the Australian association of social workers code of ethics I have found parallels to my own philosophy of life. The association has five core values that provide social work professionals with guidelines that inform their practice. These values are: Human dignity and worth Social justice Service to humanity Integrity Competence (AASW, 2002, 1999, p 8) At this stage in my live I can appreciate and accept that these values are essential for every day life. However, I must express some reservations in saying that I would adhere to these values completely. The major problem that I can foresee is that I am an individual with mixed ideals in some situations for instance where the question of life is posed I am fairly mixed I do not believe in the death penalty, yet I cannot fully disagree about the abortion questions. I can cite a specific time in my life when I was 22 and a friend told me she was dating a married man and had become pregnant. She wanted to have an abortion and I tried to talk her out f it however she went ahead and had the abortion, my first instinct when I got the news was to be critical of her and I see now that my distaste regarding infidelity and abortion prevented me from being more considerate, as a social worker I must learn to suppress my own views in order to be more receptive to my clients In situations where my values may conflict with those of a client Ralph Dolgoff etal says clashes occur in many client worker dynamics (Dolgoff etal 2009, p112) mainly because social workers tend to give greater value to social harmony, equality, free choice and social justice. These values differ from culture to culture and may change over time. An example is the question of a womans right to choose between an abortion and not having one in the early 20th century women in Europe and North America could not get safe access to abortion services and as a result many died in back alley clinics in the attempt. However as laws around the world have changed so have values and in many societies having an abortion is now just another alternative to a woman who may have no choice but to seek such services. These differences according to Dolgoff etal may cause problems for the social worker and the client In the initial stages of therapy, however in order to ensure that my point of view does not conflict with my clients values, Dolgoff suggests that social workers need to peruse knowledge relevant to the cultural requirements of clients, this information can be compiled through interviews of clients (Dolgoff etal 2009). As social workers we need to be knowledgeable about the various issues pertaining to cultural or religious beliefs (Dolgoff, etal, 2009, 113).Although I may need to have a better understanding of where my client position on certain values comes from, it is vital that I maintain a clear impartial reserve Dolgoff emphasises the dangers inherent in identifying too closely with the clients he points out that bias will most likely result and affect the success of an intervention. However having a similar background to my client can enable a better rapport to develop between m y client and myself. Further gaps that may arise and cause me problems as a social worker deal with the matter of power; in the social work profession I have assumed power over the client. And because of this assumed power, the client is likely to feel unequal to me by virtue of my knowledge, and the clients position of service user. This power dynamic can be detrimental to the success of a social worker in trying to gather helpful insight into a clients problem, if not channelled correctly In the text Ethical decisions for social work practice Ralph Dolgoff etal suggest a number of ways in which I can ensure that my client feels comfortable enough to let go of the fear that may hamper the helping exercise. They suggest that as a social worker I need to find out what the clients values are and decide whether conflict of interests exists, and if there is conflict I must next approach the client in a way that does not mention the value in order to understand the nature of my clients problem. In order to maintain a professional standard I must remember the reasons I chose to join the helping profession, according Lesley Chenoweth and Donna McAuliffe (2005, p 6) the reasons some people enter the social work profession stem from experiences had ether in child hood or early adulthood. These experiences can sometimes provide a person with a passion to join the social work field because they were helped by a social worker and wanted to inspire others, as they were inspired. For some the experience with social services could have been negative and fostered a desire to bring change to the profession. No matter how we joined the profession it is important that we do not lose sight of the reasons why we chose social work these reasons will sustain me and keep me motivated to continue to work with clients even those who are difficult and hard to help. Acknowledging personal bias before hand can often reduce the chances of having value conflicts with clients. Chenoweth and McAuliffe regard this as effective use of self By letting my supervisors know where I stand on certain issue can ensure that I am less likely to be assigned a case that I cannot properly deal with. Maintaining a value neutral stance is another way to avoid creating value conflicts (Weick as cited by Dolgoff etal) suggests that in order to properly understand the client the social worker needs to listen carefully to what the client truly wants and should suspend all judgement, values, and personal principles in order to provide effective help to the client (Dolgoff, 2009,p, 114). In order for my future social work practice to be effect I must cultivate and continually strengthen my knowledge base and seek networks to keep me motivated. Self-awareness is key to understanding my role, as a professional helper, and critical reflections about my self in relation to my values is valuable. As the American author Daniel Coleman said, If your emotional abilities arent in hand, if you dont have self-awareness, if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions, if you cant have empathy and have effective relationships, then no matter how smart you are, you are not going to get very far.(Coleman, 2010).

The falling water droplets make the air cool and environment calm. When it starts raining slowly every one rushes to safe place to save them. Women rush to roof to take their cloth down to save from getting wet. Small children gets excited. You can easily see them jumping and trying to come out to take a feel of rain. Have you watched the scene on roads when it starts raining. †¦ ha ha its funny scene. Some people try to escape by running/ some try to take shelter under other’s roof / some take bag or books magazines on their head and try to escape. But this is all when it is weak rain. †¦ but when it is heavy rain one has no way. Even umbrellas are insufficient. The heavy lightning with thunderous sound†¦.. God save us! Prays the poor in his hut. Every one comes out on window and peeps out side scene. If you have a field in front you will hear songs of frog. Have u seen them when they speak/ their vocal sac. This seems like a baloon. The old ponders the rain scene and remembers his child hood and young days. He never forgets to guard his grand children waiting to jump in rain. Still u see the eager ness of children if they could have been permitted to take a bath. What is more that when it rains with heavy wind. U shut your door and window. And still manage to peep out side! †¦Ha ha ha !†¦ Hands off to God †¦.on this beautiful scene creation. How beautiful is the scene of nature! The black thunderous cloud, the fading day light due to its darkness, birds rushing to their nests. And the unique beauty of raining. Well this is not all. When it stops raining†¦. My local, regional and national football team is Tranmere Rovers FC; they currently have 26 members of their first team, which is managed by Ronnie Moore. They play in the Coca-Cola Football League One, which is basically the 2nd division excluding the premiership. In 1999, the sports market was valued at around à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½4.17 billion, an increase of 4.9 per cent on the 1998 value. Local Rugby The local rugby team I will discuss is Widnes Vikings, they currently have 29 first team players who are manages by Steve McCormack, they have 30 first team members in their squad In comparison to football, there is a lot less money involved in rugby league. But teams such as Widnes Vikings can still make money through advertising and merchandise. They compete in the National league 1 which is a division below the Super league. When they were relegated from the super league in 2005 they decided to remain a professional side rather than switch to amateur, this resulted in the club being in debt because they failed to achieve promotion to the super league. On 29 January 1999 Halton Borough Council took over responsibility for the entire Stadium, both financially and managerially. This was necessary as the joint venture companies arrangements were not performing as expected. This plunged the club into even more debt. Halton stadium can now hold 13,350; Widnes Vikings only have an average attendance of only 6,500. This is much lower than other clubs in the league and one of the main reasons could be the ticket prices. A season ticket can be up to à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½224.00 A normal match day ticket can be à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½16 This is much higher than other clubs in the league and this could explain the low attendances. Voluntary Sector The voluntary sector is the largest sector for participation for sport in Britain. Most amateur clubs, like Sunday league football clubs are run on a voluntary basis and some voluntary clubs own their own facilities, but most of the amateur clubs hire out to train in. The facilities that these clubs hire out are usually hired from the public sector and this gives the voluntary clubs the chance to play sport. The voluntary sector is also linked to the private sector because they can have sponsorship from the private sector. The voluntary sector is funded by the members of there own club, for example in a football team you have to pay a signing on fee, pay for training facilities and pay match fee’s which usually covers the cost of team kit and the fee for the referee. Clubs can also apply for money grants from 4 different sources, which are the national lottery, national governing bodies, government and local authorities. Public sector The public sector is split up into 2 different governments which are central government and local government and each of these have many different jobs to do for sport. Local government invests à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½1.1 billion a year on British sport and focuses on providing equitable access to sport and recreation facilities and different opportunities for the public. Central government in funded by taxes, VAT and it also receives money from the national lottery. Its role in sport is to develop policies, passes laws, funds sports councils, which are UK sports council and then one sports council each for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Central government also distributes lottery money which then can be divided out to many plans, such as providing grants and to local governments. Central government has a different number of departments that are responsible for sport and they are the department for culture, media and sport (UK), the Northern Ireland of education and Welsh and Scottish offices. Private sector The main aim of the private sector is to provide a service for its customers and members while at the same time making a profit for the company. Individuals invest their own money in facilities. There are only 2 reasons why the private sector provides sports facilities and they are to make a profit off sport and to make a profit on their own investment. The areas private sectors are involved in-active sport (tennis, fitness suites), spectator sports (stadiums for football) and sponsorship. The private sectors, such as football clubs may run football camps involving the public sector to set it up with them, or football clubs might invite voluntary clubs to their training facilities and show them round the stadium. Money in football has increased dramatically since the introduction of the FA Premier league in 1992. The main reason for this is the TV revenue the teams earn by their games being aired live on TV, usually on Sky sports on Setanta sports. This is illustrated by the figures shown by Deloitte, club revenues of over à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½1.4 billion in 2005-06 while is 2007/2008 it is expected to be above à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½1.8 billion. With the new three year deal Sky will pay à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½1.314 billion for 92 games and Setanta à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½392 million for 46 games. Foreign TV rights will produce à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½625 million in revenue whilst Internet and Mobile Phone revenue will be à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½400 million. The top club in Premiership will receive à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½50m (including prize money as well as TV revenue) compared to à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½30.4 million with the current deal. The new deals will, by a significant margin, provide the Premier League with the second richest set of television contracts negotiated by any sports league in the world. After eight weeks of working with a group of six members, the most important learning experience was learning how to use motivation in a group work. Accurately apply motivation can improve team work efficiency and outcomes. This essay will provide a critical thinking about how to use motivation in a group and discuss which aspect need improvement when apply motivation in a group. In this task, will be concentrate on three areas to reflection and analysis about how to apply motivation in a group. They are ‘managing groups and teams’, ‘planning’ and ‘leadership’. From these three areas to disclose some practical experiences, and make these practical experience relate to management theories. The first section is discussed and analysis the special understanding about the stages of group development, why people join a group and how to use motivation impact people join a group. The second section is discuss and analysis planning process, why organization need to setting a clear goal and how setting goal can provide a motivation encourage people work hard and increase work efficiency. The last section is discussing and analysis the activity of leadership and how a good leader through all kinds of methods to create employee’s work motivation and stimulate employees work hard and efficient, help organization achieve goal. From these three section, it will be argued that suitable apply motivation in various management field, will increase our group work efficiency, improve work outcomes, and successful help group completed a high quality work, achieved the group’s high goal. Project team is include employees who group to solve a specific problems, develop a product, or in some other way focus their energies in a limited time task, when the task completed, the team will be disband (Davidson et al. 2009, p440). Our team work in the eight weeks period is project team, because we are together discuss some problems and solve it, together completed presentation during 8 weeks. When the presentation is completed in week 10, our team would disband. One group’s evolvement need passes through several stages. When the development of group passes through these stages, the group will be disbandment. A well-know model of group development is the sequential-stage theory. In this theory, the group or team develops through some stages of development. The theory’s model clear shows that there have five distinct stages to group development. The five stages are forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning. The group development will follow the specifically order to completed (Davidson et al. 2009, p444). Everyone has their own motivation to join a group. Different people have different situation, people have variety of reasons to join a groups and teams. The first stage, forming, provides a platform so that everyone can have an opportunity to join any groups. According to a study by Robbins et al. (2006, p488), ‘Forming is the first stage of group development in which people join the group and then define the group’s purpose, structure and leadership’. So, it can be see that when the group development, the first things is people join the group. Therefore, motivation was occurred at the forming stage, because when people join a group, they usually have some motivations to join that group. Davidson et al. (2009, p442) state that people join groups and teams for a variety reasons, they often have some motivations to join a group. These motivations can be interpersonal attraction, group activities, group values and goals,needs satisfaction and instrumental benefits. From the evidence, it can be clear that when people join a group, they have some motivations. Such as person join a group, that group’s goal with the person’s goal same, and also people join a group because that group can satisfy people’s needs. Bosso (2003, pp399-403) claims that the reason of some organisation fail is because lots of organisational members leave organisation and find a new job in other organisations. Because the original organisation cannot give members lots of benefits, these benefits most are in terms of money. The organisation not has loyal members because it not has motivation to keep original members and attract new members. From the evidence, it can be see that people’s motivation to join an organisation is a really important factor for organisational success. If an organisation not have some special things to attract people, so people will be not join this group, because they are not have motivation to join the organisation. The organisation will be lost lots of talents and ultimately lead to failure. Our group work in week 2, we are also have some motivation to join a group. I am an international student, so I am joined a group have many local students. My motivation to join a group have many local students is because local students have language and cultural advantages, and also we all have a same task goal. This can make my work easier and more easily to achieve my task goals. With local students work together also can improve my English. So, my motivation to join that group is can help me to achieve the task goals and improve my English. We also have same motivation to form that group, the motivation is we are have same task goal. For example, a group of people climbing a mountain, in this period tethered together can climb only as fast as its slowest member. From that example, the least capable group member tends to work harder than when working individually (Gockel et al. 2008, p1316). First, goals provide guidance and a unified direction for people in the organisation. Second purpose is goals can dramatically influence other areas of planning. Third purpose is goals can provide some motivations to employees of the organisation. The final purpose of goals is serving an effective mechanism for evaluation and control (Davidson et al. 2009, p239). These purposes make lots of managers set more suitable goals in organisation. Such as athletes hope become professional athletes or qualifying for the Olympics. When athletes have a goal, they will have motivation to encourage self training hard and improve skills to achieve the goals. Funny Boy And Running In The Family | Analysis Searching for identity is big theme in Postcolonial studies. Identity or the sense of belonging plays a major role in everyones lives. Identity tells us who we really are and where we have come from. Identity can be either positive or negative. It gives us the sense of pride in being who we are. If we do not identify ourselves with our surroundings or the people we come in contact with, we are lost. We feel as if we do not belong there and hence we feel as if we have lost our identity. Actually, the search for identity is an ongoing g process and there is no ending for it. Many would do anything to find their identity and to search for the place where they belong. In both Funny Boy and Running in the Family, the search for identity is the main theme. These novels bring forth the challenges that the main characters face in the search for identity. The setting of these two novels is in Sri Lanka. However, Funny Boys Arjie faced negative challenges thrown at him whereas Running in the Familys narrators (Ondaatje) journey of self-discovery is more towards the positive side. In this paper, I will the journey of self identification by the protagonists of the both novels that I mentioned above. In Funny Boy, we are exposed to the history of Sri Lanka, Arjies homeland. A country like Sri Lanka that has just gained independence from the colonizers strives to build and recapture its own identity which was stolen by the colonizing powers. However, to form a unitary identity is not easy because Sri Lanka is made up of different ethnicities and religious beliefs. The history of racial conflict between the Tamils and the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka plays an important role in Arjies life. The rivalry between Sinhalese (Buddhist) and Tamil (Hindu) inhabitants of Sri Lanka is caused by the differences in religion and custom. Salgado argues that the connection between language and ethnicity which substantiate the discrete ethnic markers of Sinhalese and Tamil, was very much the product of British orientalism, and was embraced by the Sinhalese who stood to gain from it (12-13). The Tamil minority from India migrated to Sri Lanka between the 3rd century BC and 13th century AD whereas the Indo-Aryan in who migrated in the 5th century BC created the Sinhalese population in Sri Lanka. Since, the Sinhalese are more in population compared to the Tamils; they hold much of the political power. For so long, Sri Lanka has been under the Western powers like Portuguese and British before it gained independence in 1948, with both Sinhalese and Tamils uniting their forces. Somehow, this unity did not last long because the Sinhalese immediately assumed power and began to marginalize the Tamils. They began to treat the Tamils so badly till the Tamils had to struggle to make their voice heard. The conflict reached its peak in 1956 when the Prime Minister Solomon Bandaranaike declared Sinhala as the national language and when Buddhism was declared as the official religion; the Tamils grew angry. Arjies father says in Funny Boy, when asked about the riots, Sinhalese wanted to make Sinhala the only national language, and the Tamils did not like this. So there was a riot and many Tamils were killed (61). The Tamils after much pain and suffering from denial of rights begin to fight to establish their own nation and this is evident in Funny Boy. There was a group in Jaffna called the Tamil Tigers. They wanted a separate country and the Sinhalese were very angry about this. Ammachi often talked about the Tigers. She was on their side and declared that if they did get a separate state, which they would call Eelam, she would be the first to go and live in it. Father told her she was mad. This made Ammachi even more angry and they had many disputes about the Tigers. (61) These political and racist power struggles heavily influence many chapters in this novel and especially when it reaches the climax in the last chapter, Riot Journal: An Epilogue. In Pigs Cant Fly, Arjie clashes with his cousin sister Tanuja and disagrees with the common social norm which forbids him from playing feminine games with girls. In Radha Aunty, Radhas and Anils love situation is almost similar to Romeo and Juliet love story. Radha is Tamil and Anil is a Sinhalese and they are forbidden to get married because they belong to different religion. In See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Daryl and Nalini endeavor to expose the corruption of the government, a fruitless effort in a corrupt and laden society. In Small Choices, Arjies father and Jegan had to battle against the racial stereotyping and violence, while in The Best School of All, Arjie and Shehan both defy the authority of the principal named Black Tie. At last, in the Epilogue the conflict between the Sinhalese and Tamils got wor st which is the beginning of the civil war. Furthermore, binary oppositions the self and the other exists in every chapter of this novel in a form of stereotyping every person in their own category. Ania Loomba says that, stereotyping involves a reduction of images and ideas to a simple manageable form; rather than simple ignorance or lack of real knowledge, it is a method of processing information. The function of stereotypes is to perpetuate an artificial sense of difference between self and other (55). In Funny Boy, Arjies grandmother Ammachi cannot accept Anil because she cannot see him beyond the stereotype. She cannot see Anil for more than just a Sinhalese. What did I tell you? She was getting a lit from a Sinhalese. Only a Sinhalese would be impertinent enough to offer an unmarried girl a lift (58). Society expects its people to choose sides and in return they will be protected accordingly. Conformity makes someone feel safe and it ensures ones survival. In a power struggle, when one party has the upper hand claim on the country and affirm other minorities will be marginalized. In the Empire Writes Back, Bill Ashcoft et al claims that in post-colonial societies, the participants are frozen into a hierarchical relationship in which the oppressed is locked into a position by the assumed moral superiority which is reinforced when necessary by the of physical force (172). In Small Choices Arjies father explained the things Tamils might get in trouble with in which the Sinhalese will face no problem. When my father had finished relating the incident, Amma said, You should have taken Jegans side. After all, he is more important than the peon. As Tamils we must tread carefully, my father replied. Jegan has to learn that. Even I have to circumspect when Im talking to the staff. If I was Sinhalese, like Sena, I could say and do whatever I liked. Amma sighed. Its so ridiculous, she said. What to do? One has to be realistic. (190). When the minorities do not have equal rights as the majority, this will lead to dislocation and alienation in their own country. This will result in vengeance and vendetta: You know, Sonali said, Sometimes I wish I was a Sinhalese or a foreigner. I dont, Diggy said. He glared at us again. Im proud to be Tamil. If those damn buggers come here, Illà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ (196) Diggys reaction is understandable and its called retaliation. His reaction is much similar to the reaction of the Tamil Tigers. Tamil Tigers are consists mostly of young people who are unable to put up with Sinhalese demands and discriminations. Society draws a line between us and them so that people must confirm to either side, no matter how ridiculous it may seem. This applies to gender stereotyping as well. When asked why Arjie cannot play with his cousin sisters, his mother replies, It doesnt matterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Life is full of stupid things and sometimes we just have to do them (20). So what will become for those who refuse not to belong to just one category? What if they exist in a third space; in between? In Arjies case, he belongs to the Tamil minority as well as in gay community. Homosexuality is not tolerated in Sri Lanka and therefore Arjie is marginalized twice than an average Sri Lankan. Hence, it will be harder for Arjie to feel accepted and to have a sense of belonging. However, there many instance in Funny Boy where the characters try to defy the norm of life and social rules to live their life their own lives. This is evident in Arjies monologue below. How was it that some people got to decide what was correct or not, just or unjust? It had to do with who was in charge; everything had to do with who held power and who didnt. if you were powerful like Black Tie or my father you got to decide what was right or wrong. If you were like Shehan or me you had no choice but to follow what they said. But did we always have to obey? Was it not possible for people like Shehan and me to be powerful too? (274) Most of the time, the characters who decide not to follow the social rules or everyday norms are secluded and alienated by their family and country and people. For an example, Aunt Doris, the director of the stage play Arjie was involved in chose to go against her Burgher familys wishes and married a Tamil man. This of course ended her relationship with her family. Even Arjie, after thwarting his principal and realize who he is and who he wanted to be with, thought to himself, As I gazed at Amma, I felt a sudden sadness. What had happened between Shehan and me over the last few days had changed my relationship with her forever. I was no longer a part of my family in the same way. I now inhabited a world they didnt understand and into which they couldnt follow me. (285) Here Arjie is talking about his sexual awakening but his feelings also apply to those who made choices that alienate them from the people and places they belong to. However, to Homi Bhabha the third space gives people like Arjie a chance to create a new identity. This third space allows them to transcend their position and go against those suppress and oppress them. It gives them power and freedom to transcend boundaries society rules. They get the best of both worlds. It gives them self empowerment to move on in life and its a place where the can voice out their opinions. Most of all the third space gives them sense of belonging and identity. The third space is a mode of articulation, a way of describing a productive and not merely reflective, space that engenders new possibility. It is an interruptive, interrogative,and enunciative space of new forms of cultural meaning and productive blurring the limitation of existing boundaries and calling into question established categorizations of culture and identity (Bhabha, 1994) Before Arjie is even aware of his tendencies, his family would have makes sure that any un-stereotypical gender fondness would have been eradicated by his family. His father who was afraid that Arjie might turn out funny forbids him to play bride-bride with his cousin sisters. Well, on the other hand when Arjie plays with boys he was called a girlie boy. This separates him from the possibility of being a girl or a boy. Gender stereotypes are enforced by families and society to demarcate the separate worlds of boys and girls. This leaves Arjie caught between the boys and the girls worlds, not belonging or wanted either (39). His exclusion from both parties suggests us that he inhabits some third space between these two. This third space is addressed as funny and it has a shameful connotation. According to Gopinath, challenging gendered spaces in this novel which is portrayed by the main character. This is because he allows the inner space to be something more than a site of gender agr eement. He allows gender and fantasy play. And by doing this he reveal[s] how non heteronormative embodiments, desires, and pleasures surface within even the most heteronormative of spaces (170-171). Throughout the whole book, we follow Arjies journey growing up and attempting to search for his identity. Arjies search for identity is similar to Sri Lankas own research for identity amidst the warring ethnics. If the focus is just among the Tamils and Sinhalese, what about the homosexuals, Burghers and Muslims? Arent they part of Sri Lanka as well? Even though all of them are different in many ways, they yearn for a place to call home where they can be safe and live without persecution. Funny Boy also puts the story of the everyday people of Sri Lanka in the spotlight. It doesnt focus on one party but it focuses more on the struggle these people went through to live in a Sri Lanka they all own. It is not about finding a balance between your identities, or trying to define within a particular one, Selvadurai explained. Rather, he said it is about being open-minded and being accepting of how others define you (www.thecannon.ca//shyam_selvadurai_funny_boy_on_campus). In Running in the Family, Michael Ondaatje narrates the quest to search about his father by re-conceptualizing the past and patching up the fragments of his family history. Ondaatje searches for his identity by retracing back his familys past, especially his father in Sri Lanka. During certain hours, at a certain years in our lives, we see ourselves as remnants from the earlier generations that were destroyed. So our job becomes peace with enemy camps, eliminate the chaos at the end of Jacobean tragedies, and with the mercy of distance write histories(179). The framework that Ondaatje uses is a fictionalized memoir. This allows Ondaatje to create his own form of reality and his own truths. This enables him to challenge boundaries between fiction and reality. Besides that, Ondaatje explores the autobiographical self and in his case, the quest for Mervin Ondaatje is an important detour in his search for his own identity. He uses the technique of searching about the other (his father) so that he can find his own identity. As Marlene Kadar points out, writing about life is the site of the other, and this other is autobiographical in one sense, and not at all in another (153).When Ondaatje is searching deeply about his familys and fathers roots he begins to shape his own roots. At the end of the book it is revealed that Ondaatje is the mirror image of his father. One could certainly claim that the end of the narrative is just the beginning of the discovery of the other (i.e. the father) through the self (i.e. the narrator) (Speaking Ones Truth: Reading, 3). In Running in the Family, Ondaatje uses the infusion of family tragedies, their life dramas, warmth and love to connect the dots and construct his identity. He includes both the public and private when he researches about his family past. By doing so, he is able to see the connections between his family and his colonial inheritance. As Patricia Hampl remarks, the truth memoir has to offer is not neatly opposite from fictions truth. Its methods and habits are different, and it is perhaps a more perverse genre than novel: It seems to be about an individual self, but it is revealed as a minion of memory which belongs not only to the personal world but to public realm (205). Sri Lanka is a country consisting of a complex social network because it is a multinational country which has many national and cultural identities. Ondaatje acknowledges Sri Lankas identity as hybrid and creolized nature. This almost similar to Ondaatjes family background: Every one was vaguely related and had a Sinhalese, Tamil, Dutch, British and Burgher blood in them going in back many generations. There was a large social gap between this circle and the Europeans and English who were never part of Ceylonese community. The English were seen as transients, snobs, and racists and were quite separate from those who had intermarried and who lived permanently. My father always claimed to be a Ceylon Tamil, though that was probably more valid about three centuries earlier (41). However, there is a tension between Ondaatjes endeavour to reunite him with his family and to keep a distance from his family so that he is able to break through his familys history from different points of view. It is as if when Ondaatje runs in with his family, he is also running away from his family. The running aids the author in a more complex search for his identity because it allows him to discover his identity in different forms. Here, Ondaatje is creating history while collecting data, fragments of both Sri Lankas and familys histories. As to fill in the gaps in his identity, he uses myth to provide explanations and to be as closer to the truth of that time and closer to the truth of his family. By researching his country of birth, he sees it as the other that he is constantly searching for. He is both the insider and the outsider who speaks for both the marginal and the central: I am the foreigner. I am the prodigal who hates the foreigner (65). Here Ondaatje represents the immigrants, immigration and culture. The framework of fictionalized memoir allows both writers to speak their souls truth (cf.Hampl, 203). The search of identity is a process where there is a need to rely on the national identity and family identities. Its like you cannot runaway from where you belong because they somehow make you who you are. Arjie and his family had to leave Sri Lanka because Sri Lanka was no longer safe to be their home and it was no longer where they belong whereas, Ondaatje has to come back to Sri Lanka because that is where he can find his identity through his familys history. Even though, Arjie and his family had to run to Canada to survive, they are still Sri Lankans and are part of that country. Arjies father sent Arjie to a different school so that Arjie wont turn out funny, Arjie found Shehan who strengthen his sexuality. When it comes to Ondaatje, even though he is settled in Toronto, Canada, he has to go back to his birth place to find his identity. He even has dreams of going back to Sri Lanka. At last, one had to admit that the main part of their identity depends on where you are born and where you came from whether you are accepting it or not.
